Russian Prosecutor General's Office declares U.S.-based Human Rights Foundation undesirable in Russia

The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has decided to designate the activities of Human Rights Foundation as undesirable in Russia. The organization was established in the United States in 2005.

The Foundation’s declared goals are the global promotion and strengthening of rights and freedoms, and providing assistance to victims of political repression, with a particular focus on states that its members consider authoritarian.

The organization runs the “Tyranny Tracker” project, an interactive map that purports to show the degree of each state’s commitment to democratic values. According to its creators, the Russian Federation has been labeled a “fully authoritarian regime”.

To substantiate its claims, the Foundation spends its resources on disseminating information that discredits the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and provides support to organizations whose activities have already been declared undesirable in Russia.

Human Rights Foundation is also involved in developing recommendations for the U.S. administration on imposing sanctions against Russian citizens and attempts to track financial flows from Russia with a view to further freezing Russian assets abroad.
